Eugene Francis Cassady Obituary
Eugene "Gene" Francis Cassady passed away peacefully on May 10, 2014 in Sacramento, CA. He was born to Forrest and Mae Cassady on January 7, 1923 in Bakersfield, CA, where his grandfather had settled prior to the turn of the century. He was raised on Oleander Avenue and attended St. Francis Elementary and Kern County Unified High School. As a boy, he worked with his family at the Security Market on Chester Avenue.
Gene attended UC Berkeley for college. His studies were interrupted when he joined the US Navy during WWII and was an instructor at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago. After the war, he resumed his education at UC Berkeley and completed his bachelor's degree. He went on to marry the love of his life, Barbara, in June of 1950. While on their honeymoon, he was recalled to service and sent to Korea where he served on the USS John A. Bole. After returning from Korea, he attended UCLA where he earned an MBA and began his accounting career with Price-Waterhouse. In 1955 he returned to Bakersfield and opened his own practice, which he continued until last year. He and Barbara built their dream home in Old Stockdale, where they raised their six children.
Gene had many interests. He loved golf, and he and Barbara were members of Stockdale Country Club for more than 50 years. Music and singing were also favored pastimes, and Gene performed with the Kern Philharmonic and Starlight of Kern. He and Barbara loved the outdoors and took their young family on backpacking trips in the Sierras and later RV trips across the Western States. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children. Throughout his life, Gene could be found telling stories about his beloved Bakersfield, his family history and his time in Korea.
Gene was active in Saint Francis and later Saint Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, of which he was a founding member. He was a member and Past President of North Bakersfield Rotary Club, as well as the Bakersfield Chapter of California Society of Certified Public Accountants. He gave much of his time to many other civic and professional organizations.
Gene was most proud of his six children, and Father's Day was always one of the biggest events of the year. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Dan and Elizabeth, Jim and Rita, Brian and Ingrid, Paul and Jan, Michael and Tanya, and Jeanne. He is also survived by grandchildren Colin and Alex, Gina and Dave, Caitlin and Matt, Ben, Genesis, Roxy, Maddie, Ricky and Caley, Casey, and great-grandson Daniel.
Services for Gene will be on Thursday, May 22, 2014. Services begin at 9:00 am with the Rosary followed by Mass at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 7100 Stockdale Highway, Bakersfield, CA. The burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, 3700 River Blvd, Bakersfield, CA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the in honor of Gene.
