Eugene Townsley Smith Obituary
Eugene Townsley Smith October 15, 1915 - September 6, 2013 Eugene Townsley Smith was born in Bakersfield October 15, 1915. He passed away peacefully at the home he loved on September 6th, one month before his 98th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgy, in 2002 after 63 years of marriage. They traveled extensively during their time together. Gene enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and after training, he joined the 8th Air Force in England. He was a B17 pilot and completed 30 missions, 20 as Captain. After being discharged in 1945, he continued his work at the Minute Mart, the family owned grocery business on California Avenue. In 1952 he sold the Minute Mart and joined his brother Ralph in the real estate business as a salesman. His two other brothers, Harry and Jack Smith, were in related areas of the business. Gene looked forward to the yearly pack trips with his brothers and friends to Soda Flat where Ralph had a mountain cabin. He continued his close ties with his niece, Donna James. "Uncle Gene" was included in many of their family get togethers. Gene also enjoyed the annual dove hunt where he offered his friends his specialty, an Early Time sandwich. Gene was a past president of the International Footprinters Association, and is also a honorary life member in the Bakersfield Association of Realtors. The third Tuesday of every month Gene had lunch at Woolgrowers with the Oldtimers. He is survived by his three daughters Sydney Perry, Judy Stoffel and Becky Sanders and seven grandchildren Tim and Nancy McGinnis, Michael Stoffel, Michelle Bassett, Jennifer Nocar, David Sanders and Kathryn Romero. He had 10 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on September 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn chapel, 3700 River Blvd. Immediately following the service, a lunch at Woolgrowers will be held.
