Evelyn Gonzales Cardenas Obituary

Evelyn went home to be with our Lord on March 30th. Evelyn was born in Bakersfield and lived here her entire life. She attended local schools in the area but was most proud of being a graduate of Our Lady of Guadalupe School on California Ave. Aunt Evelyn never had children of her own but had a multitude of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and considered her their second mother. Our aunt enjoyed our many family gatherings and was not shy about asking if the menu would include one of the following: fruit salad, macaroni salad, or potato salad. Having one of the three pretty much guaranteed her attendance.

She could take a waiver on any of those three if you would serve her a good bowl of menudo.

Our aunt loved mariachi music and always had the radio going while watching her favorite shows. She enjoyed attending concerts. Juan Gabriel was one of her many favorites, as well as the local mariachi at Mexican restaurants and at Stars Theatre when featured.

Our aunt was a very generous woman. Even though she was not rich, she always remembered our birthdays with some small gift and insisted on buying Christmas gifts for all of us, even though we told her it was not necessary.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Feliciano and Francisca Gonzales; brothers, Elias, Ralph, James, Manuel, Joe; and sister, Margarita Rodriguez.

She is survived by her two sisters, Vera Ruiz (Alfred) and Lupe Fernandez (John), whom she enjoyed a close, caring relationship with; and sister-in-law, Alice Gonzales.

Special thank you to her nephew Richard and wife Marylou, who assisted her with maintaining her home before she could no longer live independently at home, and to niece Gloria, who was her shopping partner, friend, and driver before her illness.

On behalf of our family a special thank you to Evergreen Acute Care in Bakersfield and Optimal Hospice.

Our beloved aunt has gone home. We will miss you, but you will always be remembered.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 7th from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 8th at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. For condolences please visit: Greenlawn Funeral Home
