Devoted mother, nana, sister, friend
Fern was called home to eternal rest on August 21, 2014 in Bakersfield, California with her family by her side.
Fern, the eldest of 6 children, was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Ella Bruner Spencer and Edward Spencer. She spent most of her formative years in Wewoka, until the family moved to Bakersfield, California. She earned her high school diploma from Bakersfield High School, and while there, met her future husband. Harold L. Matlock. After high school, Fern earned as associate degree, and worked as an Area Manager for the Kern County Housing Authority. Outside of work, she devoted her life to raising her children, connecting with her family, and being a role model in the community.
A firm believer in faith and service, Fern was a member of numerous charitable and philanthropic organizations including the Fraternal Order of the Eastern Star, Continental HI-FI'S and the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion. She relished her role as a charter member of the Bakersfield chapter of the Links Incorporated. But most importantly, Fern was a faithful and devoted member of Cain AME Church.
Affectionately, known as "Ms. M" or "Nana". Fern will always be remembered by family and friends for her generosity, grace, elegance and fondness for wearing pearls. Preceding Fern in death were her parents, Ella Bruner Spencer and Edward Spencer; brothers, Felton and Tony Spencer; son, Theo Bell and her loving husband of over 60 years, Harold Matlock.
As the matriarch of her family, Fern leaves to cherish her memory three sister, Polly Warren (Harvey), Lea Spencer, and Carvell Browning: brother, Williams "Bill" Spencer (Sharon); and children, Saundra Matlock-Pettus and Harold "Chipper" Matlock Jr. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews. Additionally Ms. M also leaves to cherish her memory extended family Charlie Smith(Judi): Joann Bell and life-long friends Antoinette Mangrum, Barbara Donnelly, and Edith Bradford.
The family has been overwhelmed with love and support from so many and would like to say thank you. Special thanks to the staff at Rosewood Health Center for the dedication and care they provided and to her church family for their continued prayers and support.
Although our family is grieving we find comfort in knowing that through her children, grandchildren and many, many loved ones Fern's legacy will live on. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donation be made to the of Kern County.
