Frank Kenneth Johnson June 27, 1924 - July 8, 2012 Frank Johnson was born in Bakersfield in 1924 and lived in Bakersfield for all of his eighty-eight years. He attended local elementary schools through 8th grade and then spent four years attending East Bakersfield High School where he graduated in June of 1942. Being a few weeks shy of the enlistment age of 18, he got his mother to "fib" about his age and he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served three years, seeing duty on Guadalcanal and various other South Sea islands, and obtained the rank of Sergeant before the war's end. He remained a very proud Marine until the last breath of his life. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked short stints with the Southern Pacific Railroad and Bell Telephone before enrolling for a year at Bakersfield College and two years at East L.A. College. With his college behind him, he gained employment at the Kern County Public Works Department for the next 32 years. He retired in 1981 with an Engineer II rating. Being retired from one job did not keep him idle. He chose to both work and serve at the First United Methodist Church for sixteen years. Most of his time there was volunteered, but he did spend years as a part time janitor, which he considered more a labor of love than a "job". During the decade of the 1990's, he served three terms on the Kern Co. Grand Jury. He always identified this time as an extremely proud endeavor. In 1948 he married Zerita Guyette and they raised four children together. Frank is survived by those four children: Gary Johnson and wife Sandra (Bakersfield); Debra Johnson and husband Byron (Tehachapi) Susan Raney and husband Robert (Bakersfield) and Tina Goforth with husband John (Bakersfield). They lift him up as an example of what a father should be. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren...so far. We love him, we will miss him, and we are greatly comforted that he is with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Visitation will be held on today, Tuesday, July 10th, from 5:30 to 8:00pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary. Chapel Service will be held on Wednesday, July 11th, at 10:00am also at Hillcrest. Burial with military honors to follow. www.bakersfield.com/obits
