Freda Coughran Swan Obituary

Freda Coughran Swan
August 1, 1938 - August 8, 2018

Freda passed from this world after living courageously with cancer for the past 2 1/2 years.

Freda was born to George and Hessie Coughran, the 10th of 12 children, in Caddo Gap, Arkansas.

The Coughran family moved to Bakersfield in 1946. Freda attended local schools, graduating from Bakersfield High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Allen Swan, in 1957. They had three children, Robert Allen, Michael Ray and Kristi Deann.

After 33 years of faithful service, Freda retired from Kern County High School Central Kitchen.

Throughout her life Freda made many enduring friendships. She and Allen were very active in the North High Booster Club, instrumental in planning many fun and successful fundraisers benefiting North High's athletic programs.

All her life she practiced generosity, kindness and compassion to all she met.

She was a role model for her family in the way she made it a priority to stay connected by making time to be together and always expressing an interest in their lives. Her presence will be greatly missed.

Freda was preceded in death by parents George and Hessie Coughran, siblings Callie Cogburn, Otis Coughran. Pauline Miller, Vernice McLean, Maxine Gonzales, Flossie Crabtree, Buddy Coughran and grandson Robert Swan.

She is survived by husband Allen, sisters Inez Hackstedt (Don), Betty Warren (Jim), brother Roy Coughran, children Robert (Bertha), Michael (Mirella) and Kristi (Perry). She also leaves behind grandchildren Candace Swan Youngblood (Steve), Michael Swan, Scott and Mason Swan, Zachary and Jansen Swan, Amy Austin, Ashley Saffle, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.

The family would like to express our appreciation to Optimal Hospice and a special thank you to Hospice nurses Joann Fikuwa and Theresa Smith for their exceptionally kind and caring service.

A viewing will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 14 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park. A private service for family will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 10:00 am at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum in the Pavilion.

At Freda's request, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Optimal Hospice Foundation, 1315 Boughton Dr, Bakersfield, CA 93308.
