I grew up in Lebec and the Vances were a big part of my life. Their house in the canyon they lived was the prettiest and biggest and it was always fun to go over to their house. Both Gene and Jean took great pride in their home and in their community. Sadly, my mom died the same day that Gene Vance died. Chris and I have talked about that alot, that they went on their final walk at the same time. Gene was always the strong silent type and we always felt safe in our community with him as the fireman. Passages like this are hard to take.

Dear Jean,
I don't know if you remember me but I lived in Frazier Park in 1975 or so. My then husband worked for the sheriff's department. You and Gene were so kind to me. Our daughter was quite small and I still have pictures and fond memories of spending an Easter with you and your family and you helping Shawna hunt eggs. I remember Gene as a very tall, kind, gentle giant. I remember asking you, after seeing your double bed, how on earth the two of you slept on it :) I know you will miss him dearly and I just wanted you all to know that people leave ripples in other's lives and you and Gene did that together. May God bring you peace in your sorrow. With much love

I started working at KCFD in 1969 and Gene was at Lebec then. I never worked around Gene much, but I never heard anything but nice things about Gene, what a great guy and gentleman he was. He will be missed sadly by all who knew him.

I worked with Gene at Lebec on "B" shift at Lebec when I was a new engineer in the early 70s. He had a very calming affect on his crew and helped teach us about the mountain. My most memorable shift was the night it snowed 20" and gene had the windows open and a goose down comforter sleeping like a baby. I had 4 army blankets and was freezing as well as many other good memories. We will miss you Gene.

Gene was a great guy. He was a Captain at Lebec when I first started as a Seasonal Fireman in'71. He was quiet and strong. It was my pleasure to have known him.

My brother Chuck and I bothand served in the KCFD, he retired and has since passed and I left after six years. Chuck knew Gene better than I but I thank him for his service in the fire department. I miss all my old KCFD buddies, Gene and the rest were all great guys. My condolences for your loss.
