George Eugene Dillin Obituary
George Eugene Dillin 1921-2013 George Eugene Dillin, who sailed the South Pacific during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Essex, and with her crew engaged in more sea battles than any other Allied vessel, died of natural causes July 25 in his own bed at his wife's side. He was 92. Mr. Dillin, of Bakersfield, is survived by his wife of 67 years, Vera Jane (Jane) Dillin; sister Marjorie Sibley; children Terry Simonson and husband John; Tim Dillin and wife Vicky; Debra Carter; and eight grandchildren: David and Leslie Simonson; Katie, Kimberly and TJ Dillin; Brenda, Brittany and Bailee Carter. George, a native of Erie, Illinois, met Jane there after the war, where she was teaching third- and fourth-graders. The two soon married and moved to California, where he served more than 40 years as a Master Carpenter and Jane taught while they raised a family in Sunland-Tujunga. The couple later built two homes in Lake of the Woods and some 20 years ago settled in Bakersfield. Public Services will be held August 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Bakersfield National Cemetery, Chaplain Bruce Ball of Gentiva Hospice officiating. Honor Guard will be provided by The Associated Veterans of Kern County. www.bakersfield.com/obits
