George John Borkovich Obituary
George John Borkovich 1921-2013 Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 8:30 a.m. and Mass of Christian burial will follow at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 17th at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for George J. Borkovich. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, 3700 River Blvd. George John Borkovich was born November 14,1921 to Paul and Kate Borkovich. He grew up in Redondo Beach, California where he attended Redondo Union High School. After high school graduation he attended Compton College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and served as a seabee in the Aleutian Islands and Okinawa. After the war he returned home and attended USC where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1949. George was an engineer with the Division of Oil and Gas for over 30 years, and worked for the D.O.G. until his retirement in 1986. He met Mary McGuire while working in Taft, and they married in January 1954. The young married couple moved to Redondo Beach then Santa Paula, Taft and finally Bakersfield in 1962. George and Mary had six children, all of whom attended St. Francis School and Garces Memorial High School. George enjoyed watching sports" especially the USC Trojans and the LA. Dodgers. He liked to travel and was able to meet his many cousins on several trips to Croatia and Argentina. He had researched the genealogy of both his and Mary's family, producing family trees for his children. George also enjoyed reading, woodworking, and helping his children with school projects. In recent years his favorite activity was spending time with his grandchildren. George was a devout Catholic and volunteered in many capacities at St. Francis and Garces. After his wife Mary passed away in 2011, George moved to the Los Angeles area, where he lived with his son Paul and wife Lisa's family, and later his daughter Kathy and husband Rick's family. George is survived by his children Theresa Borkovich, Katherine Borkovich and husband Richard Hodges, Paul Borkovich and wife Lisa Hauck, Margaret Weddle and husband Steven Weddle, John Borkovich and wife Maggie Borkovich, Gerard Borkovich and wife Tina Borkovich; grandchildren Zachary Weddle, Erik Hodges, Joseph Borkovich, Claire Weddle, Amy Hodges, Emma Borkovich, George Borkovich, Nicholas Borkovich, Matthew Borkovich, and Sara Borkovich; sister-in-law Margaret McGuire; nieces Rose Azparren and Ann Brunson.
