Gerald Patrick "Pat" Franey Obituary
Gerald Patrick Franey was given the gift of life on March 16, 1921.  At 95 years old, on December 30, 2016, he was called home.  Pat was one of five sons born to Charles H. and Winifred Marie (Newhouse) Franey, in Bakersfield, California.
Pat graduated from St. Francis Grammar School (1934), Kern County Union High School (1938), and Bakersfield Junior College (1940).  He then obtained a degree in Business Administration from St. Mary's College, in Moraga, California (1942).  Soon after, he married the love of his life, Mary Kathryn O'Hare, daughter of James Michael and Sara (Saunders) O'Hare, on August 29, 1942 at St. Francis Church in Bakersfield, California.
While working on a survey crew for the Western Pacific Railroad, Pat was drafted into the Army in 1943 and assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 275th Combat Engineer's Battalion of the 75th Infantry Division.  He received his training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Breckinridge, Kentucky.  Now a Staff Sergeant, Pat sailed overseas on the Aquitania, landing in Wales in the fall of 1944.  He was sent to Port of Le Harve, France, and served in Belgium during the "Battle of the Bulge".  During his time in WWII, Pat's Division moved through France, near Cologne, and later crossed the Rhine River into Germany, near the town of Dortmund.  Toward the end of his service, Pat received a battlefield commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in early 1945, which he happily said gave him a nice berth on the ship, Queen Mary, by which he returned home to the USA.
Pat worked various jobs from bookkeeper, to farmer and rancher on the old O'Hare Ranch with brother-in-law, Raymond Pascoe, before becoming Business Manager for the Kern County Parks and Recreation Department, from which he retired in 1984.  Anyone who knew Pat would agree - he was blessed with a great sense of humor and many talents.  He ardently played and sang at the piano, composed and recorded his own music, sang in the Marian Choir, and was an excellent cook.  He never tired of making wonderful goodies and memories with his family: barbeque's, a homemade swimming pool, pony carts, zip lines, tree-houses, etc.  The list was always growing as were the adventures at the ranch, Pismo and in the mountains.  Pat was a happy Irish Catholic, persevering and faithful to the God who created him; striving to live and share his faith in his daily life at home, work, and in his parish.  Pat also demonstrated to his family the importance of 'giving back' with a grateful heart.  He supported numerous charities and the work of the Knights of Columbus, The Legion of Mary, St. Vincent De Paul Society, and Garces High School.  Mr. Franey worked hard to see Garces remained open as a viable opportunity for Kern County students and as a long-time supporter, he was recently added to the school's Wall of Honor.
Pat and his wife, Mary K., were happily married for 56 years.  They had twelve children: Joan (Pat Smith), Michael (Mira), Mary (Bill Dorr), Elizabeth (Jean Hatch), Joseph (Julie), Monica (Bruce Gollmyer), Patricia (Allan Goff), Raymond (Annie), Charles Mark, Gerard Anthony, Kathryn (Rick Troncale), Jerome (Janine).  Pat was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hatch in 1981, grandson, Travis Joseph Hatch in 1992, his wife, Mary K. Franey in 1998, and grandson & fellow veteran, First Lieutenant Mark Patrick Smith in 2015.  Pat and Mary K.'s legacy includes 62 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  Please remember Pat, Mary K., and their family in your prayers.
