Glen D. Holt
February 12, 2018 - December 19, 1930
It is with deep sadness to share that our beloved dad, Pops and friend, Glen D. Holt passed away on February 12, 2018. He was born December 19, 1930 in Missouri. As a young child he traveled with his parents and siblings from Missouri working in the fields and following the crops for a living; this took the family all over Arizona and California, living in labor camps or in tents. Because his family was constantly on the move he attended 13 different schools by the time he reached the 8th grade when they finally settled to live in Shafter, California.
Several years later he worked for the Shafter Police Department where he became a Sergeant. While on the force he taught pistol shooting and became an expert sharpshooter. He enjoyed telling the story about when a FBI agent came to Kern County from Washington for an instructive firings course. After he finished the 3 week course the agent wanted to shoot against him. Dad shot a 400 and the agent shot 398 (who admitted he had never been beaten before or shot a 400) so the agent wanted to try again and dad shot another 400, with that the agent said "I give up". Dad resigned from the Police Department to pursue his dream of owning, breeding and racing Standardbred race horses. It was during this time that he found his passion. From the mid 1960's to the 1970's he became one of the most successful harness horse drivers in the state of California starting out on the county fairs circuit, then on to Hollywood Park, Santa Anita, Bay Meadows, Los Alamitos and Cal Expo. He was highly respected by his peers in the Harness Horse business. He was the first trainer in California to have a swimming pool built for training horses and he was frequently sought out to train and race horses from stables across the country, Canada, France, New Zealand and Australia. He was a 3rd Degree Mason. He was a kind hearted and empathic man with great integrity that was forged in him from his childhood roots. It never was a surprise for his children to hear of his acts of kindness for someone who needed "a little help", whether it was buying someone airline tickets, repairing autos, paying bills or giving cash, he did this unconditionally. In 1950 he married Helen Rose from Shafter and together they raised 4 children. In 1986 he married Annette Funicello and was a faithful husband and caregiver to her until her passing in 2013. Together he found a new passion with forming the Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases. He faithfully continued his work to raise money for research along with the help of his good friend Dave Mason. He enjoyed telling jokes, his daily drives to the ranch as well as lunches and afternoon visits with his friends in Shafter. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was predeceased by his parents Newton and Letha Holt, 5 sisters, 3 brothers, 1 grandson, 1 great grandson, ex-wife Helen Holt and wife Annette Funicello. He is survived by his sister Martha "Mott" Seidel Mauney, brothers James and Tommy Holt, his children, Michael (Linda) Holt, Debbie (Greg/Hippo) Hanson, Philip Holt and Sharla (Mike) Johnson, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many godchildren and friends. There will be a celebration of his life, for details contact one of his children. The family requests memorial donations be made to the AFRFND at, https://connect.calfund.org/give/annettefunicello

Glen, was a very nice man. When I worked at Cal Expo cleaning stalls he was always nice to me. He sometimes would pay me to drive his car up to the paddock on race days. I will never forget his kindness.

I never knew this man, but just watched the documentary on Annette on her MS. What dedication he had for his wife. Being 81yrs old himself and being her FT caregiver until the end is sure testiment of what his character would of been. RIP Glen ... your now with Annette again dancing in the stars

While I never met Mr. Holt face-to-face, it was simply of him being in California and me in Wisconsin. Now, you might guess that Glen had more on his plate to do with me, but he was always polite and affable.

What a wonderful human being! We should all take note on how a spouse is supposed to be when a partner develops a long term illness. He gave it his all. God Bless this kind man. Of course he acheived many many other things. But I just now discovered who he was by seeing the documentary about Annette. That alone spoke volumes on the kind of man he is.

He was an admirable man who had deep loving feelings of devotion and commitment to his wife, Annette. I can also identify with the feelings and struggles he endured when he was making such a brave and loving attempt to help cure his wife. I went through a similar experience with my first wife who developed a severe case of Vasculitis which took her life after a 4 year struggle. I tried so hard, like Glen, to keep her alive and never lost hope and I was with her at Hospice when I heard her take her last breath. She had always been so healthy and youthful until suddenly this terrible disease hit and caused her to slowly deteriorate to a helpless state. During her hospital stays, I slept on the floor next to her bed for so many nights. It was so painful to watch her decline to such a helpless state like Annette. Like Annette, she got to the point where she could not walk or have use of her hands and she was often mentally confused. I talked to so many doctors. Anyway, I can say I have a clear idea of how Glenn felt during his ordeal but I went through it for only 4 years. I certainly hold great admiration for a man who went through such a thing for 25 years!!! God bless Glen Holt!!

I'm sad to learn of Glen's passing. I just watched the documentary he did about Annette and their struggles with M.S. Glen was such a wonderful husband and caregiver, a true angel. My brother died from M.S., and it's a heartbreaking situation to see someone you love fall prey to the affects of this insidious disease. God bless Glen for all his efforts to help Annette and others who suffer with M.S. and I hope the foundation will continue to look for a cure..God bless Glen for his kindness and may he Rest In Peace. ❤

First let me extend my condolences to Glens family. From the obituary I find Glen was quite a guy. I was hoping to send a message to Glen to thank him for taking such good care of Annette. My girlfriend and I were lucky enough to meet both him and Annette at Disneyworld. You could tell just by watching him how much he cared for her. That meeting will remain with me all my days. RIP Glen.

I watched a video on YouTube on how devoted and full of love and kindness and compassion he was too Annette. It was just amazing that there is someone in the world like him him. I looked him up today after watching the video because I wanted to write and see if he was still alive and write him and just tell him how touched I was by watching him on the video taking care of Annette. He should be in the dictionary under the definition of real love. I am very happy that you all his family that are left have had such a treasure in your life, what a wonderful man.

I looked up Mr. Holt after watching a video of him caring for Annette in her battle with M.S. I have a longtime friend who is battling this same form of the disease and now cannot communicate at all. It is heartbreaking. I just want to say what a wonderful man Mr. Holt was to dedicate himself to her and her care. Sorry to hear of his passing and my sincere condolences to the family.
