Glenda Fidelia (Rush) Galpin Obituary
Glenda Fidelia Galpin (Rush) January 14, 1937 - May 21, 2012 The eldest child of Melvin and Freda Rush, Glenda moved to Bakersfield when she was in the seventh grade. She attended St Francis and Garces where she made many lifelong friends. Always good with numbers and finance, Glenda attended Bakersfield College, taking classes to hone her mathematics and bookkeeping skills. She worked briefly for the City of Bakersfield, then met Ralph Galpin, married, and opened Hillcrest Lighting. In the mid-'60s, she and Ralph built their own building on Niles St. and opened Galpin Interiors. As it turned out, Glenda not only had a knack for numbers but a talent for decorating. For over forty years she worked with customers in Bakersfield and up and down the Valley decorating and redecorating their homes and businesses, helping them find the perfect new item or refurbish an old one. Many a customer marveled at how she could transform an old lamp simply by adding a new lampshade. Glenda also bore four children: Nancy Rink, David Galpin, Daniel Galpin, and Ted Galpin, all of whom reside in Bakersfield along with her two grandchildren, Scott Galpin and Kelsey Galpin. An avid card player, Glenda enjoyed playing pinochle with her card group for many years. In more recent years, she developed poker playing skills and made many new friends and acquaintances at the card table. She will be remembered by her friends and family as a woman of strength, honesty, and selflessness; as a woman who worked tirelessly be it in the shop or in her garden; as a woman who delighted in trips to the beach and Tahoe; as a woman who loved watching the Food Network, reading her cookbooks, and sitting down to a meal of garlic encrusted pork chops at Woolgrowers; and, as a woman who was convinced she was going to beat back her four-year battle with cancer because there were still things she wanted to do. Glenda is survived by her husband Ralph, her children and grandchildren, her sisters Janis Rush, Loretta Bryant, and Alice Daniels, and her brother Daryl Rush. The family asks that donations be made to the in lieu of flowers. Friends and family who would like to know when Glenda's Celebration of Life is scheduled, please send an email to orink@bak.rr.com and we will notify you.
