Grover Daniel "Dan" Radley Obituary
Dan was God's gift to two wonderful parents, Floyd and Margaret (Vice) Radley, in Falls City, Neb. Not long afterwards the family welcomed another boy, David Edward, who pre-deceased him in 2001.
Dan grew up in Nebraska loving the outdoors, fishing, delivering newspapers from his bicycle, and eventually going away to Bethany Nazarene College (aka Southern Nazarene University) in Bethany, OK. With the prospect of serving in Vietnam, Dan completed officers' training for the Marine Corp during the summer, but was given a medical discharge just prior to being commissioned.
Dan roofed houses to pay for his education while completing a Bachelor's of Science degree and earning a teaching credential. At the beginning of his senior year, his brother Dave had a date with a sophomore, Marilyn (Kounter), from Texas. Her second date was with Dan, and, according to him, she "tricked" him into proposing after only a few dates, to which she gladly said a big "YES" to a marriage lasting 47 years.
He taught science at Beardsley Junior High for 38 years (and a few years of weight training and oceanography). To say he loved his job, students, and colleagues would be an understatement. He was often greeted with an exuberant/excited "Mr. Radley!" by former students for years after his retirement.
His love for the outdoors never ended, hunting with a gun as well as bow and arrow being his all-time favorites.
Dan and Marilyn were blessed with two wonderful daughters, Kristen and Jayme. Blessings continued as five granddaughters were born into the family. For Tim and Kristen Goree: McKennah, Morgann, and Marlee. For Woody and Jayme Melton: Jaida and Lacie.
The most important thing for which Dan would want to be remembered would be his love for the Lord and sharing "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." Eph. 2:8, 9. He passed out small informational brochures to waitresses, medical staff, and many other just-met individuals wherever he went. Perhaps you were one of those.
Dan is survived by his wife, mother, children, grandchildren, and a host of family members on the Radley and Kounter sides.
His services are: Viewing at Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest, 2739 Panama Lane, Thursday 4-7 p.m. graveside at Greenlawn Memorial Park Southwest, Friday, 9 a.m. Memorial & Celebration at Olive Knolls Church of the Nazarene, 6201 Fruitvale Ave., Friday, 11 a.m. Rev. Rob Songer will be officiating.
