Hazel Johnson Obituary
Hazel was born in La Junta, Colorado to Elbert and Irene Patterson. In the early years, the family moved often, but eventually settled in Tustin, California where Hazel attended and graduated from Tustin High School. She continued her education at Santa Ana College and San Jose State where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in business. It was at SJSU where she met her future husband Walt Johnson. They married in 1953.
In 1954, Hazel and Walt moved to the central valley where he began a teaching career and they started their family. Walt's work started in Avenal, then took them to Shafter, Coalinga, and Bakersfield. They would be blessed with four children; Michael, Caryl, Lisa, and Michele. Hazel was the perfect example of a coach's wife; supportive of Walt's activities and very attentive to the responsibility of raising their four children. Hazel was a loving mother and very supportive all of the children's activities. Somewhat quiet and reserved, Hazel was the strength of the Johnson family and the glue that kept everyone headed in the right direction. Hazel and Walt became members of First Presbyterian Church and have been servants of our Lord Jesus Christ for 45 years. Patient, loving, kind, and devotion are all words that describe her as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We are all thankful to know she has been welcomed to her reward in heaven.
Hazel is survived by her husband of 61 years, Walt; children, Michael Johnson (Sharla); Caryl Witcher (Bob); Lisa David (Keith); and Michele Newell (Scott); grandchildren; Sarah, Alec and Seth Johnson (Bailey Taylor); Jon (Jasmyn), Tyson (Joyce), and Daniel (Melissa) Witcher; Travis(Katie) and Samantha David (Samuel Clark); Zackary and Dylan Newell; great-grandchildren Haylee and Paige Adams; Nathaniel, Oliver and Harper Witcher; and Eisley David; and brother Bob (Sharon) Patterson.
Our family wants to give special thanks and recognition to Jeanne Schamblin, owner of The Gables, where Hazel spent the last 18 months; her caregivers; Esther, Maria, Fetaw, Andrea, Annette, Julia, Marquita, Dr. William Baker; and Hoffman Hospice nurses Laura and Denise. All of you hold a special place in our hearts for the love, compassion, and care you gave to Hazel through some difficult days. She was surrounded by God's Angels.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 28th, 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th St. Bakersfield, CA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Hoffmann Hospice, 8501 Brimhall Road., Bldg 100, Bakersfield, CA 93312.
