Helen Elizabeth Eberle

1922 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Helen Elizabeth Eberle
August 16, 1922 - August 16, 2012
Helen Elizabeth Eberle passed away peacefully on her 90th birthday, August 16, 2012 in Visalia, California.
Born in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1922; Helen and brother Loren came with their parents, Otto and Charlotte Yaussy to a small farm in Arvin, California in 1924. Helen attended local schools, including Bakersfield College and graduated in 1944 from San Jose State College with a Bachelor of Arts and a General Elementary Teaching Credential. Helen returned to Kern County and began a teaching career that would span 30 years, teaching at Rosedale Union Elementary, DiGiorgio, and Sierra Vista schools. On June 8, 1946 Helen married Harry Eberle and together they farmed in the Arvin area and raised their three children. As retirement approached, they moved from the farm to the town of Arvin where they enjoyed "city" life together until Harry passed away in 1984. Helen continued to live on Campus Drive surrounded by wonderful neighbors until shortly before her death when failing health necessitated that she move closer to her children.
Helen was a faithful wife, loving mother, thoughtful friend, and kind neighbor. She was a dedicated and skillful teacher who spent many evening and weekend hours at her kitchen table preparing for the next school day. Helen's membership in the Arvin Union Congregational Church was a fundamental part of her life. During her retirement years, Helen spent many hours in her yard and her home was well-known in Arvin for its beautiful flowers. She enjoyed many wonderful trips with her brother Loren, her children and grandchildren, and she treasured her travel adventures with her Arvin friends. During her quiet hours at her home, Helen found pleasure in reading and solving the Jumbles in her daily newspaper. Her monthly lunches with her good friend and advisor, Mike Bowles, were always red-letter days on her calendar. She loved to catch up with her relatives at their "cousin lunches" and correspond with her favorite, Marjorie Calhoun in Ohio. Helen was devoted to all of her family, but during the last decades of her life, it was being a grandmother that brought her the greatest joy.
Helen leaves behind her son Mark Eberle and wife Brenda of Bend, Oregon, daughter Carol Berryhill and husband Bruce of Three Rivers, California, and daughter Mary Eberle and husband Chris O'Brien of Springville, California. She is also survived by her grandchildren Emily Berryhill and Grace Berryhill of Davis, California, Fletcher O'Brien of Portland, Oregon, and Nathan Eberle and Karen Eberle of Bend, Oregon. Helen's nieces Jane Coffelt and Cathy Yaussy, and nephew Tom Yaussy were also beloved members of her family.
A memorial for Helen will be held
at the Arvin Union Congregational Church, 500 Campus Drive, on Saturday, September 15th at 11:00am. Donations may be made in Helen's memory to the Endowment Foundation of the Arvin Congregational Church.
