Helen (Serna) Laurita August 18, 1914 - March 27, 2013 Helen (Serna) Laurita, 98, passed away peacefully with family at her side, March 27, 2013. She was born in Zacatecas, Mexico to Nicolas and Cruz Torrez. She came to California from Mexico at the age of 2, and grew up in Cutler, California. There she met and married Marcos Serna in 1931. From this marriage came four children Rosa, Alfred, Rachel, and Joe. The family moved to Delano in 1937 when Marcos went to work at the West Side Market, until 1942 when they opened Serna's Market. After her separation from Marcos, she later married Mariano Laurita. They lived in Richgrove, California, eventually moving to Delano to be close to family. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; daughter Rosa; granddaughter Carla Romero; son-in-law Joe (C.B.) Aguilar; daughter-in-law Lyn Serna; 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Helen is survived by her children Alfred (Mary) Serna of Georgia, Rachel Aguilar and Joe (Mary) Serna of Delano; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; and 2 sisters. Visitation will be held Friday, April 5, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Delano with Rosary and Mass at 9:00 a.m. Burial to follow at North Kern District Cemetery.
