Helen Sands Obituary
Hand in hand with her creator. Mom left this life for a better place on January 2, 2015. Born in West Plains, Missouri on February 25, 1917 to Horace and Bernice Rickel. Mom was the oldest of their children. At eleven years of age age lost her mother which put her in charge of the house and care of a younger brother and sister.
In 1936 Helen married Carl Sands in Harrison, Arkansas, and after trying to decide between Arkansan and California to live, they permanently settled in Lamont, California in 1952.
Work was the only thing mom knew from an early age, and has been her life since she worked in the fields, was a housekeeper for Dr. and Mrs. Goss for many years, and did sewing and ironing for others when time permitted. She also helped our Dad in the evenings after working a full day, with his job. After retiring at the age of 70 when asked what she wanted to do, her reply was "Nothing. I just want to stay home".
Mom was a good cook, and everyone knew about her biscuits and gravy breakfasts. It was no accident that family and friends were always there. Holidays were spent making candy, cookies and desserts which she shared with everyone.
In addition to all of the above Mom taught a Sunday School class for 28 years at Harmony Baptist Church in Lamont. After moving to Bakersfield, she was a faithful member of Day Break Baptist Church.
Mom and Pop were married almost 62 years when he passed away in 1998. In addition to losing Pop, she is preceded in death by her brother J.B. Rickel, of Harrison, Arkansas and sister Evelyn Fitz Gibbons of Wichita, Kansas and son-in-law John W. Maytubby of Bakersfield, California.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dale Sands (Ozzie), Delmer Sands (Loveta), Patsy Maytubby, Daryl Sands (Mary) all of Bakersfield, and half sister Carol Waggoner of Harrison, Arkansas. Mom is survived by ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Monday, January 12th, 11:00am at Basham Funeral Care, Bakersfield with burial at Arvin Cemetery following the service. There will be a short viewing one hour prior to the service.

We love you Mom and only hope we can be an inspiration to others
as you have been to us.
