Helen Theresa Wilver Obituary
Helen was born and raised in Pittston, Pennsylvania, one of eight children born to Leo and Constance Burns. She always described a happy childhood that revolved around family, friends, and activities at school and church. She graduated from St. John's High School and the Pittston Hospital School of Nursing.
She met her husband, Bill, in 1944 while he was active in the Army Air Corps and married in 1948. They were married for 62 years before he passed away in 2011.
Helen and Bill had three daughters, Theresa, Mary, and Elizabeth, and moved from Pennsylvania to California in 1956 so Bill could accept a job at Northrop.
Helen began working as a nurse at Gardena Memorial, eventually becoming Director of Nursing.
In 1977, Bill retired and Helen accepted a job as Director of Nursing at Tehachapi Hospital.
She then went to work on 3 Main at Mercy Truxtun from 1983 to 1992, when she retired from hospital nursing. Nursing was a big part of her life. She saw a great deal of changes through the years but was always up for the challenge.
After "official" retirement, Helen and Bill loved to travel, especially back to Pennsylvania, to visit with family. She enjoyed visiting with her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They all loved her "Irish" spaghetti.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, a professional with talent and integrity, a caring member of her community, and an active member for over 35 years of St. Malachy's Parish in Tehachapi.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and daughter, Mary. She is survived by her daughters, Theresa Burchfield and Elizabeth Knapp; her grandchildren Heather Grace, Colleen Rey-Hipolito, Jennifer Knapp, Brandon Burchfield, Darrin Burchfield, and Lauren Burchfield; and her great-grandchildren, Wesley Grace, Andrew Zuniga, Enrique Martinez, and Miguel Martinez. She is also survived by her sister, Sally Walsh.
A special thank you to Dr. Michelle Remmes and her staff for all their years of caring and support.
