Herbert Joke was born Oct. 1, 1928 in Bakersfield, California, where he graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1947. He retired as Produce Supervisor for Young's Supermarket.
On November 9, 1951, Herb joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany and managed a theater at the base. On Oct. 15, 1953 Herb was released from Active Service to the Army Reserve. At the time of his discharge on Nov. 8, 1959 he had attained the rank of Corporal.
Herbert loved to bowl and was proud of his high score of 299. He belonged to four Senior Leagues and always looked forward to spending time with his "bowling friends". He also enjoyed Friday night poker games, Saturday lunches with his eating buddies, and trips to Las Vegas.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Jung Sun and Ada Joke. He is survived by his son, Rocky Joke of Reno, NV; brother, Henry and wife Elaine Joke; two sisters, Bette Hamaguchi of San Mateo, CA and Virginia Wong of Hillsborough, CA; grandson, Rocky Joke II of Visalia, CA; and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Gary Joke, Jon Joke, Bruce Joke, Steve Hamaguchi, Matthew Wong and Rocky Joke, II.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 27, 2015 at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara Chapel. Military Honors will be at 1:15 at Bakersfield National Cemetery.
