Homer H. Cates Obituary
Homer H. Cates May 5, 1921 - August 6, 2012 Homer, 91, passed away August 6, 2012. He was born May 5, 1921 in Arkansas to parents James Luther Cates and Mittie Sexton. He had five brothers and three sisters. Homer served his country during World War II, enlisting in the Sea Bees in 1942. He was honorably discharged on December 5, 1945. Homer immediately became an employee in the oil industry. Homer started his own trucking business in 1969 and continued until retirement in 1986. Homer became a member of the Masonic Fraternity July, 1954. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and became a member of the Shrine. The year, 1975 he was a member of Kern County Shrine Club, enjoying The Moble Nobles on their camping trips. He was also a member of the Shrine Petroleum Club. Homer has been a loving father and husband and has been blessed with sons, Gordon, Robert, Michael and Kenneth along with several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings. Homer leaves behind his beloved wife, Verna, they were joined together December 28, 1973 almost 39 years of loving each other. The last year Verna gave all she could to make Homer comfortable till the end. A special thanks to all who helped from Optimal Hospice, to Dr. Blask, Dr. Smith and nurses. A very special thanks to aid Oliveria Collins, Lupe Gonzalez, Caregiver and friend. Thanks Lennis and Carolyn for all your assistance and help in caring for Homer. Family only viewing will be held Friday, August 10th, at 12:00pm with Masonic service to start at 1:00pm in the Sanctuary at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd, Bakersfield, CA, 93306. The pallbearers will be sons and grandsons. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Shrine Hospital for Children or Optimal Hospice. www.bakersfield.com/obits
