Hugh Curtis Conway Obituary
Curt was born in Oklahoma to Virgie Virginia and OD (Denton) Conway and was the 5th child of 6 siblings. He graduated from Stratford High School in 1954. Curt joined the Marine Corp when he was 17. Due to asthma, he was honorably discharged. Curt got into the oil business which took him to Aztec New Mexico. This is where he met and married his wife of 54 years, Kayla Moin Smith. He and Kayla had two children, Benjamin Curtis Conway and Diana Klawitter. The oilfield work eventually landed Curt and his family in Bakersfield, Ca. in 1963.
In 1994, Kayla and Curt opened The Curiosity Shop Antiques and Collectibles business at 19th and Eye St. After Kayla's passing in 2011, Curt ran the shop up until his final days. Many friends and customers will miss Curt's colorful stories and sharing a cigarette with him out on the sidewalk.Curt was preceded in death by his wife, Kayla; two brothers, Verlion and Dalton; two sisters, Opal Lemons and Trilvia Gaither; and his parents.
He is survived by his son, Ben (Malinda Click-Conway), and daughter, Diana Klawitter; grandchildren, Darrel Klawitter, Chris Yeargan, Ernie Klawitter (Kjesti), Amanda Klawitter, and Ben Klawitter all from Bakersfield; great-grandchildren, Freddie, Maynessa and Todd; sister Glada and brother Wendyl (Mary) both of Oklahoma; sister-in-law Joyce Dozier (Bob) of Missoula Montana; brother-in-law Darrel Smith (Garnetta) of Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
There will be no formal services but rather a private family BBQ (which he always enjoyed) with some of Curt's fondest "Okie" food to celebrate and remember the good life that he lived.
A special thank you to Optimal Hospice and Susan Goodman, his caretaker, who gave Curt the dignity and kindness that he deserved in his final days.
