Hugh Reavis Mason Obituary
Hugh Reavis Mason 1931 - 2012 Hugh Reavis Mason, 81, passed away on June 17, 2012, in Tehachapi, CA. Interment will be private, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Hugh was born to Edwin Arthur Mason and Elizabeth Francis Reavis on April 21, 1931, in Pacific Grove, CA. Hugh lived in Santa Cruz, Sacramento, and Fresno before coming to live in Bakersfield in 1939. He grew up in Bakersfield and lived most of his life there. He attended Franklin Elementary School, Compton Junior High, and Kern County Union High School. He married Donalda Helene Shepherd, with whom he had four children: Leslie, Toni, Mike, and Kelly. He married Candace Weaver George in 1975 and became the dad to Jason George. He and Candace moved to Tehachapi in 1979, where they have been ever since. He loved his home in Tehachapi and named it "Rancho Grande." He would always say when he was returning home, "Let's go home to Rancho Grande, Momma." He was a member of the Los Angeles Roadsters for 28 years, as well as the National Street Rod Association, and a member of Good Guys. He was involved with cars from his early teens until his death. His pride and joy at the time of his death were a '29 Ford Hiboy and a '36 Ford Cabriolet. He instilled his love of cars into his children. He started working as young boy, delivering dentures on his bicycle to the local dentists. He subsequently worked for Coffee's and Seilers, sold insurance at Allstate, and cars at Haberfelde Ford, until he opened his own insurance office, which he eventually sold. He then went to work for Hopper, Inc. and was there for 19 years. He was known by his co-workers and associates as "Hugger." He was always dressed for the occasion, be it St. Patrick's Day or 4th of July. He was a true patriot. He loved his country and was the proudest dad alive when his son, Jason, graduated from West Point. He never met a stranger. He will always be remembered by those who knew him as the kindest, nicest, most considerate man they had ever met. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Jason, and daughter, Leslie. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 36 years, Candace; children, Mike and wife, Kim; Kelly and wife, Cindy; and Toni and husband, David; grandchildren, Brooke and husband, Aaron; Alison and husband, Brian; Andrew; Patrick and wife, Laura; Breanne; and Jill (Rocky); great-grandchildren, Mick and Ozzie. We would like to thank our wonderful neighbors for all of their help, Wayne and Debi Sewell, Neil Browning, and Ron and Sharon McCoy. A special thanks also to our dear friend Mike Hale for his help and support. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hugh's memory can be made to the Jason George Memorial Foundation at www.jgfoundation.org. Arrangements are being handled by Wood Family Funeral Service. We love and miss you, Poppa! www.bakersfield.com/obits
