1924 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Irene Hageman Bower was born April 20, 1924 on Hageman Ranch in Rosedale, California. She attended school in Bakersfield. Irene was in the first graduation class of East Bakersfield High School in 1941. She also attended Bakersfield Junior College in 1941-1942.
In the summer of 1942, Irene worked for Leo B. Hart with Kern County Superintendent of Schools. In October 1944, she served as the first female member of the Bakersfield Police Department assigned to the Kern County Sheriff's Department in the Identification Bureau. She was then assigned as the first secretary to the Detective Division of the Bakersfield Police Department. Irene became office manger of the Bakersfield Scottish Rite Bodies of the Masonic Lodge in 1983. She then retired on December 31, 2010 at the age of 85.
Irene is a 50 year member of Bakersfield Chapter #125 Order of the Eastern Star. She was Worthy Matron (1981), Inner Guard for Grand Chapter of California (1982), President of the Bakersfield Chapter Past Matrons (1983), Wimadauis Club (1983), and Daughter of the Nile (1984). Other offices Irene served were Deputy Grand Matron (1984) and Grand Representative to West Virginia in California (1985-1987).
She is survived by her husband Donald L. Bower, daughter Carolynn Valdes Ford, step-daughters Kristine MacNeill, Kathleen Calkins, Suzanne Lewis, Carolyn Warren, step-son Donald L. Bower, Jr., and nephews Steven & Greg Hageman.
The family would like to thank Flo Moreno and her staff of Golden Hearts Residential Care Facility for many months of compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hoffman Hospice of Bakersfield in Irene's memory.
Service will be held at Greenlawn Mortuary (3700 River Blvd.) in the chapel at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016.
