Iris was born in Treherne Manatoba Canada April 22, 1929 and she passed away on June 1, 2014 in Bakersfield, California. She was raised by her grandfather and grandmother in Brookes Alberta and Trail, British Colombia. She studied pre-nursing at Canadian Union College in Lacombe Alberta and Nursing at Glendale Adventist Hospital and Hinsdale Adventist Hospital in Chicago. After earning her RN license she went to Ketchikan, Alaska with her friends and worked there for a year. She then moved back to Glendale, California and worked at Glendale Adventist Hospital where she met Gary. They were married in 1956. They moved to Bakersfield in 1958. She worked at San Joaquin Hospital for 21 years as Staff Nurse, Manager of outpatient surgery and Director of Nurses. She then worked at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital as Manager of outpatient services for 10 years. She was very involved with school at Bakersfield Adventist Academy serving on the school board for many years, chaperoning many school trips, camping, skiing and class trips. She was a long time member of the Hillcrest SDA Church.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gary, son Donald and his wife Jenina, granddaughters, Kimberly and Emily of Pasadena; daughter, Karen and her husband Keith Abbas, granddaughter, Kristin and grandson Kyle of Martinez; brother Wayne Hanson and his wife Janet of Dundee, OR; sister, Myrna and husband Alex Zapotichney of Langly, BC and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 7th, 2:00pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers make contributions to Bakersfield Adventist Academy, 3333 Bernard St., Bakersfield, CA 93306 or the animal .
