Jack Herbert Bloch M.D. Obituary
Dr. Jack Bloch was born in New York City to Moses and Rosamond Bloch in 1930. His family relocated to the Los Angeles are when he was a small boy. Dr. Bloch attended UCLA as an undergraduate, and then was chosen for and graduated at the top of UCLA's first medical school class of 1955. Following medical school, Dr. Bloch completed one year of research at UCLA. He began his internship the following year at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 11956. Dr. Bloch then fulfilled his military obligation at National Institutes of Health/Public Service in Betheseda, Maryland from 1956-58. It was there that he met his future wife, Gretchen Rokahr. Following his military service discharge, he married Gretchen in 1959. He then began an 8 years Surgical Residency/PhD program at the University of Minnesota under Dr. Owen Wangensteen.
Following completion of his surgical residency in 1968, he trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at Cornell University. After Fellowship Dr. Bloch spent the next years in Academic and Private Practice, three years at Cornell/New York Hospital and three years in combined academic/private practice at the University of Illinois/Peoria Surgical Group in Peoria, Illinois.
In 1976, he became the Chief of Surgery at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, California. He aggressively pursued academic excellence for the program and soon obtained affiliated professorship at UCLA. As the surgery program at kern Medical Center evolved, an alliance with UC San Diego formed. UC San Diego and Kern Medical Center implemented an exchange program whereby residents and surgical specialists-in-training rotated between the two hospitals. From 1980 to 2005 Dr. Bloch trained well over 100 medical residents and medical students, many of who are practicing physicians and surgeons in Bakersfield to this day. He continued to teach medical students rotating at KMC until fall of 2014. Through the years his work received many awards for his achievements. Dr. Bloch was a brilliant surgeon, a revered chairman, a kind and understanding mentor, an exemplar to his students and was beloved by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gretchen, his son Dr. Robert Bloch (Kelly) and their children: Peter, Katherine, and Charles; and his son Dr. Paul Bloch (Mary) and their children Eric (EJ), Ellen.
Memorial and gravesite services were held Sunday May 17, 2015 at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, Ca.
