James B. Owen Obituary
Services will be held for James (Jim) B. Owen, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, on September 13, 2014 at 11:00 at Calvary Bible Church, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Mortuary. Jim passed away September 2, 2014 after a brief battle with lymphoma. Jim was born to Carl and Mary Owen on December 27, 1939 in Bakersfield, California. He attended local schools and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1958 and later earned an AA in Fire Science from Bakersfield College. After serving in the United States Navy, he returned to Bakersfield to marry the love of his life. Jim and Rose Mary were married on August 24, 1962 and recently celebrated 52 years of marriage. Jim spent his career with the Bakersfield Fire Department and retired in 1993 as a captain after 25 years of service.
Jim and Rosi were blessed with two children, Stacey and Steve. Their early married years were spent involved with their children's activities. Jim was the biggest fan of whatever his kids were involved with, including multiple summers out at GBA and endless weekends at the race track. Many vacations were spent in their camper traveling to various destinations.
Jim was instrumental in refurbishing a 1927 American LaFrance (Frog) fire engine. This led to many weekends participating in Firemen's Musters throughout the state. The team was consistently one of the top teams to beat. There was quite a bond amongst the team and these men remained friends to the end.
After retirement, Jim became an avid golfer and the course is where he found camaraderie after his firefighting days were complete. He proudly displayed his three hole-in-one trophies. He loved his Riverlakes Wednesday Senior Men's Group and this is the activity he missed the most once he became ill. Jim could be quite a character and many have reminisced about his outgoing personality and sense of humor.
Jim and Rosi enjoyed traveling and using their motor home. One of the things he said after he realized his time was limited was that he and Rosi still had big plans. There were still places he wanted to go and things to see. They were very blessed at all they were able to do together.
Jim always loved kids and was ecstatic to become a grandpa. His grandkids were a constant joy and really brought out the tender side of him. If he thought he was busy being involved as a parent, he was doubly busy as a grandpa. Whenever a grandkid received a schedule of activities there had to be a copy to give to grandma and grandpa.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters; Carlene Mahlum and Nancy Pollard. He will be dearly missed by his wife Rose Mary, daughter and son-in-law Stacey and John Bell and son Steve Owen. He leaves behind his four grandchildren, James, Cassidy & Hailey Bell and Colton Owen. Jim will also be missed by his brother-in-law Gary Shuck and wife Birdie, brother-in-law James Pollard and step brothers-in law Jack, Don & Wesley Ward. In addition, he will be greatly missed by numerous nephews, nieces and treasured friends.
Jim professed his faith in Jesus Christ as a young man and as his time grew short reassured us of that decision and commitment.
