James Barkley York Obituary
James Barkley York was called home to our Lord and Savior December 28, 2013 with family by his side, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born March 28, 1929 in W. Des Moines, Iowa, to Berl and Dora York. Jim was the 4th of eight children and raised on a farm in Waukee, Iowa. After graduating from Waukee Consolidated High School, he attended Drake University College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1952. Jim met and married his high school sweetheart, Marjory Carlota Harrison, March 26, 1949.
Jim and Marge moved to California in 1954, settling in Bakersfield, where he started his life long career as a pharmacist. He was proprietor and pharmacist of Rogers Drugs in Oildale for 15 years and Greenfield Pharmacy for 10 years. He truly loved his career as a pharmacist, always treating his customers like family.
His hobbies were baseball and flying single engine planes. Playing with the grand kids and great grand kids was very important to him,he was their biggest fan.
He was a generous, quiet, humble man that lived his beliefs founded on the bible and his faith in Jesus Christ. We will miss you dad, husband, brother, grandpa, friend - but we will see you again.
He was proceeded in death by both parents, Berl and Dora, brothers Don, Bob, and John as well as his youngest son, Kenton B. York.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjory York, sisters Ann (Bill) Cramer, IA. Irene (Bergie) Bergland, CA. and Betty (Bob) Oswalt, CA. Brother Dick York, CO, Sons, Steve (Donna) York, Bill York, daughter Sandy Meeks, 10 grandkids, 20 great grandkids, 17 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Greenlawn Chapel, 3700 River BLVD. Tuesday January 7th at 10:00 am ,followed by Internment.
Viewing and visitation is on Monday January 6, 2014 from 4:00 pm- 7:00 pm.
