James Thomas Scruggs

1935 - 2012 In Memoriam Condolences
James Thomas Scruggs In Memoriam
In Loving Memory of James Thomas Scruggs June 5, 1935 - October 22, 2012 One of the finest and most revered teachers in the history of the Kern County High School District has died. Jim Scruggs was loved by his students and respected by his colleagues from his first days of teaching at Bakersfield High School in the early 60's. During his career in this district he also taught at West, East and South High Schools. Recently he was invited by former students to come to Bakersfield from his home in Virginia, and to be honored at their class reunion. There, in evidence of their affection for him, they gave him a standing ovation, a moving tribute he well deserved. Among his many accomplishments was his leadership to success of students in yearly Academic Decathlons. Their preparation required long hours of study, both at school and in his home, where the young contestants were inspired to hard and constant work by his unfailing example. Jim was born and raised in the small town of Elkton, Virginia, not far from the Blue Ridge Mountains. He graduated from Randolph Macon College in 1957, and received a master's degree from American University in Washington, DC. His career in teaching and education continued for thirty-two years until his retirement in 1993. After his retirement he returned to Virginia, taking up residence in Alexandria. He lived close to Washington D.C. where he did excellent and dedicated volunteer work for the National Park Service. Throughout his retirement he remained in contact with friends he had made in Bakersfield, several of whom accepted invitations to be his guests on trips to Washington D.C. and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Jim is survived by several cousins and many long time friends. A graveside service to honor his life will be held in Elkton, Virginia at Elk Run Cemetery close to the graves of his parents and two aunts. He will surely live on in the memories of his former students, and in what they teach to their own children of the values by which he taught and lived. www.bakersfield.com/obits
