James Turner Hitchcock Obituary
James Turner Hitchcock July 8, 1921 - May 12, 2012 Jim was a 3rd generation Californian whose roots trace back to post Civil War. His mother's family came to Bakersfield in 1870. His grandfather came to California at the age of 14 by covered wagon, first to Los Angeles and later to Bakersfield. He operated a livery stable and was city Marshall in the early 1900's. Jim was born to Arthur and Erma Hitchcock on July 8, 1921. He was raised in Bakersfield, educated in local schools, and attended Kern County Union High School, Bakersfield College and UCLA. He served in the Army Air Corps. in World War II. For 30 years he worked at Karpe Real Estate Center as Vice President, General Manager and house accountant. Jim was a faithful and active member of First United Methodist Church serving his church in many positions over the years. He volunteered on other community boards, enjoyed his association with the Navy League and was very active and supportive of the YMCA. Jim married his high school sweetheart Jeanne in 1942. Their 70th wedding anniversary was on April 4 of this year. Jim is survived by his wife Jeanne, son Tom Hitchcock and wife Nancy, daughter Cathy Bailey and husband Steve, daughter Lisa Hitchcock, and daughter-in-law Julie Hitchcock. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. His son Stephen died suddenly and unexpectedly last July. Special thanks to Interim Assisted Care, Optimal Hospice, and all of the loving staff at The Park Residence Home who helped us through this difficult time. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, May 19 at First United Methodist Church.
