Jean Chambers Laird September 28, 1919 - February 13, 2013 Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 21 for Jean Chambers Laird, who died February 13, 2013 in Bakersfield. Internment at Union Cemetery will follow. Jean was born to Cyrenus and Mary Loftus Chambers in Billings, Montana on September 28, 1919. After moving to CA and living in Long Beach and Visalia, her family settled in Bakersfield in 1932 where she attended local schools and graduated from Kern County Union High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in business with a minor in Spanish from the University of Nevada, Reno. During World War II she worked for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY before returning to Bakersfield and taking a job with the Red Cross. Jean soon met and married Rollin Laird, and they enjoyed the next 46 years together until his death in 1996. She had boundless energy. After raising three children, she taught for 15 years for Bakersfield City School District both as a bilingual teacher and a curriculum specialist. Jean was a member of University Women, Alpha Delta Kappa (Lambda Chapter), Kern Historical Society, Kern Retired Teachers Association, and enjoyed many years volunteering at the Guild House. She enjoyed sewing, cooking gourmet meals, reading, traveling to places near and far, and especially the company of others. She'll be remembered by her family as a lover of life, a true optimist, and being their unfailing supporter. She is predeceased by her husband, Rollin, daughter Mary, and brothers James and Robert. Survivors include her son Rollin of Colorado Springs, and son John, his wife Julie and grandson Peter all of Bakersfield. T he family extends a heartfelt thanks to the caring staffs at Glenwood Gardens and Mercy Southwest Hospital. In remembrance of Jean, charitable donations may be made to Guild House, 1905 18th St., Bakersfield, 93301, or the Kern Chapter of CA Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund.
