Jean "Manez" Etchamendy Obituary
Jean "Manez" Etchamendy passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2015, at age 84.
Jean was born in Esterençuby, France, on March 14, 1930 to Jean and Gracianne (Gueçamburu) Etchamendy. He lived and worked on the family farm in the Basque Country with his parents and six siblings, before emigrating to the United States at age 19.
He came to Arizona to herd sheep for his uncle Arnaud Etchamendy. He worked hard, saved money from his wages, and bought his own flock a few years later. He herded his flock through the alfalfa fields near Phoenix, the open desert, and the White Mountains. He found his life's calling in the wilds of Arizona.
In 1959, Jean married Louisa Lopez. Together, Jean and Louisa expanded their sheep business and worked as advocates for the lamb and wool industry. They served tirelessly in the National Wool Growers' Association and the Arizona Wool Growers' Association where Jean served as President for several years. In 1986, they moved their sheep business to Bakersfield and joined the California Wool Growers' Association.
Jean believed one must work hard, but also enjoy life. He was a master story teller who would entertain the whole family with his stories. He greatly loved singing traditional Basque songs after a good meal and was a member of the Kern County Basque Club choir. He was an avid racquetball and pilota player. He excelled at the Basque card game mus. He will be greatly missed.
Jean was preceded in death by Louisa, his wife of 52 years, his parents, and his sister Katherine Goyeneix- Marmande of France. He is survived by his brothers Jean-Baptiste Etchamendy of Phoenix, Arizona, Arnaud Etchamendy of France, and Martin Etchamendy of Bakersfield; his sisters, Anne Marie Minaberri and Marie Curutchague of Bakersfield; and, numerous cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in Arizona, California, and France, all of whom he loved dearly.
A Rosary followed by Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday January 15, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, CA. Pallbearers are Mark Etchamendy, Christian Curutchague, Dominique Minaberrigarai, Robert Etchamendy, John Etchamendy and Jean-Baptiste Etchamendy, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers are Rene Caballero, Antoine Laxague, Carlos Bassa, Allen Perreira, Joaquin Azparren, Jose Burusco, Jean-Pierre Dalia, Fernando Iturriria, Ignacio Maisterrena, Alfred Saldubehere, Eliseo Valencia, and Jean-Baptiste Veschembes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Jean's name to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, or the .
