Joan Gibbons Obituary
Joan Gibbons October 2, 1931 - August 8, 2012 Joan Gibbons was born in Lethridge, Alberta, Canada to Alec and Pearl Martinson on October 2, 1931. She died of cancer on August 8, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Earle, and her children: Eric and Donna Gibbons; Jeffrey and Debbie Gibbons; Greg and Toni Gibbons; and Grace and Steve Cabalka; her brother, Ken Martinson, and brothers in-law and their wives, Jerry and Val Gibbons and Jimmy and Dorothy Gibbons. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren along with many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister Jean and Jean's husband Al Wheelan; her sister Yvonne; and her parents in law, Jim and Hazel Gibbons. Joan and her family moved to Bakersfield from Canada in 1947. She graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1949. She went on to get her nursing degree from Franklin Hospital School of Nursing in San Francisco in 1954, marrying Earle Gibbons that same year. Though a registered nurse, she worked only a few months then immediately began having her family. She dedicated her entire life to being a mother, wife and grandmother. She loved playing tennis and bridge at Stockdale Country Club making lifelong friends who were so important to her. A few years ago her family acquired a home at Avila Beach, which brought her great enjoyment. Joan served many years as an officer and director on the Rosewood Retirement Community Board. She was involved in a national nurses health study for over fifty years for which she received a diploma and award. Joan had a very quiet, but strong Christian faith. Watching her children grow in their faith and service to Christ brought her great joy. Because of her faith, for over 40 years she was a driving force behind her family's support of Teen Challenge and was pleased to watch their development and growth. Year after year at the Gibbons family ranch, she enjoyed hosting a barbeque for all of the staff and students where they swam, hiked, and fished. The highlight of the day was hearing stories of how lives were being transformed by the love of Christ. Services will be held at Laurelglen Bible Church; 2801 Ashe Rd., on Tuesday, August 14th, at 11:00am. Mortuary is Greenlawn. No graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to Kern County Teen Challenge at 301 East Brundage Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93308. www.bakersfield.com/obits
