Joanie Pryor-Smithey-Hulsey Obituary
JOANIE, a unique and adoring angel on earth, was embraced into heaven on Wednesday February 5, 2014 to continue with her work of spreading love, kindness, and happiness. Joanie will be happily reunited with her mother, Sarah, sister Francis, and husbands, Billy Ray and TG. She is survived by a large family including one uncle Jack; two brothers Stan and Ken; four children, Marty, Dennis, Bruce, and Sissy; one sister in law, Janie Pryor; two son in laws, Santiago and Larry; one daughter in law, Colleen; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one handsome canine Precious, and hundreds
of nieces, nephews, and friends.
MAMA was born in Porterville California on December 7, 1937. After attending Porterville High School and participating in the band as a majorette, she married her high school sweetheart, Billy Ray Smithey on March 19, 1955. She arrived in Bakersfield in 1961 where her and her family lived in the East Bakersfield area for more than 50 years. She was very active in the Fairfax, Orangewood, Edison, Foothill, and Highland school districts, Fairfax Baseball Association, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, CrossRoads Christian Fellowship, New Beginnings, and just the nicest neighbor on Adena Street. NANA will never be forgotten as she had the passionate ability to inspire thousands throughout her life with her sweet smiles, her gentle touch, and her unlimited generosity. Nana's home and annual family reunions in Visalia are where we had some of our fondest memories. Nana's home was the place to be for all family gatherings from 1960's into the 2000's where every Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and Birthday celebration were held. Nana's home was always full of the jubilant laughter, smells of warm holiday foods, sounds of guitar playing, and her favorite C&W music playing on her cherished radio station from 1961 to 2014, KUZZ. AUNT JOANIE was a fighter for her precious life along with the passionate and resolute staffs at LifeHouse and Optimal, yet ultimately lost her long and hard fought battle with Dementia and COPD.
However, her remarkable "CELEBRATION OF LIFE" will begin on Wednesday February 12, 2014 at 1:00pm at CrossRoads Christian Fellowship on 2500 Fairfax Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306. Her astonishing "CELEBRATION OF LIFE" will continue at the Frausto's Hall on 201 Sonora Street Bakersfield, CA 93305 at 3:30 pm. A private burial service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary 9101 Kern Canyon Rd., Bakersfield CA 93306 on Thursday February 13, at 10:00am. All are encouraged to attend a special public viewing on Tuesday February 11, 2012 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm also at Hillcrest. Joanie, Mama, Nana, Sister, Niece, Aunt, and Friend ...... WE LOVE YOU and you are already missed...
