Joe Charles Brown, Jr. December 6, 1929 - August 7, 2013 Joe Charles Brown, Jr., lovingly called Jake and J.C. by many, was born December 6, 1929 in Stroud, Oklahoma. He went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on August 7, 2013. He resided in Benson, Arizona since 2004 and previously Bakersfield, California. He was predeceased by his parents Joe Charles Brown, Sr. and Fern Hazel Brown; and wives Shirley Marie Clark Brown (married 1953-1986) and Shirley Behling. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jane Duncan Brown, of 22 years; his son Russell Brown and wife Phyllis; his son Robert Brown wife Jody , Robert's daughter Michelle Davis and her husband Jad and their children Jacob, Abigail, and Katelyn, and Robert's son Timothy Brown and his wife Amy and their children Gunnar and Cannon; step-son Dr. Jeffrey Duncan, wife Laura and their children Zackrey and Skyla; step-daughter Jill Duncan; "adopted" children Karel and Mark Hildebrand; and his dog Simon. Joe served in the United States Army for two years. His service included nine months of active duty in Korea. He received the Korean Campaign Ribbon, with two battle stars; the United Nations Service Ribbon, a Unit Citation and the Sygmund Rhee Citation. Joe earned an associate degree in business from Bakersfield College. Some of his employment included selling shoes at Montgomery Wards, selling drill bits for the oil industry from Hughes Tool Company, working for his Uncle Herbert Reeves, partnering with his father owning and operating the cement construction company Joe C. Brown Inc., working at Jim Alfter Concrete and later retiring from Texaco. Joe and his wife Shirley Marie were very active in Alcoholics Anonymous for many, many years in Bakersfield, owing in-part his forty-four years of sobriety to AA. They touched numerous lives of others who utilized the AA organization. Joe enjoyed teaching Sunday School and attending a Baptist Church in Bakersfield along with his wife Shirley Marie when their sons were school age, and even made church pews in his own wood shop. He later enjoyed being a part of the Canyon Hills Assembly of God fellowship in Bakersfield along with his wife Jane Duncan Brown and later the First Baptist Church in Benson. Joe always had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, sponsor, friend, mentor and brother in Christ. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, immediately followed by a reception in his honor at Florence Gardens, Canyon Hills Assembly of God Church.
