Joe Henry Brown Obituary
Very early in the morning on December 16th, Joe walked through Heaven's Gates into the arms of his Lord and Savior. He was born on January 9, 1928 in Hughes, Arkansas. At the early age of 8 years, both of his parents died of pneumonia, and shortly after, Joe and his brothers were sent to the Louisiana Methodist Childrens Home in Ruston, Louisiana. He spent the next ten years there, and always said it was a very good and loving home for him. The Home was self-sustaining, growing most of their own food; so doing all the farm chores gave Joe and his brothers a good, solid work ethic, which continued to help him all through his life.
At the age of 18, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country from 1946 to 1949. Upon leaving the service, he decided to become a barber, having had experience in cutting hair in the Home and the service. His first job was in Taft, California at the West Side Barber Shop, and later on he was the owner of Joe's Barber Shop, also in Taft. He met his future wife, Juanita Mason during this time, and they were married in Taft in September 1952. In 1963, Joe and Juanita and their two sons moved to Bakersfield, and Joe then became the owner of the A-1 West Barber Shop on Stockdale Hwy., working there for the next 30 years - then retiring and turning the business over to his son, Paul.
Joe's favorite scripture was
Isaiah 40:31
"But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."
He was a devoted walker during his working years and in retirement - most of the time walking five miles a day to work and back and later around two miles each morning in retirement. We now know that instead of walking, he is soaring with wings like eagles. He loved the Lord with all his heart and soul.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Brown, his son, Steven Brown, his brother John Brown, sister Elzena Reagan and his two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Brown and Helen Brown. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Juanita Brown; his son Paul Brown ; brothers, Ray Brown of Taft and Gordon (Nancy) Brown of Norwood Ohio along with many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held on Monday, December 29th, at 2:00pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary Chapel. He will be missed more than words can ever say, but we do know we will see him soon in that Great Bright Morning!
