JOE JOHN MILLER Jr. Obituary
Joe John Miller, Jr., was born on September 21, 1924, in Wasco, California, to Josef Miller and Marie Marty. Joe passed away peacefully the morning of his birthday, surrounded by his loving family. He was 92 years old. Joe grew up on a dairy farm in Wasco with a close-knit clan of four brothers and three sisters.
After serving in the Navy, Joe married Patricia Struempf and was a loving husband and devoted father to their five children. Joe was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Wasco chapter, and also a Grand Knight, preparing and serving many plates of deep pit barbecue. He served on the school board at St. John the Evangelist School in Wasco for 25 years. Joe was also a member of the Houchin Blood Bank Ten Gallon Club, Toastmasters Club, and the American Legion.
Joe loved deep sea fishing, lively family gatherings, going to the casinos with his siblings, and spending time at the Central coast with his extended family. He farmed 160 acres in Wasco until 1970, worked 11 years for Oxy Chemical, and marketed compost for Holloway Gypsum until his retirement at age 75. Continuing his life of service, Joe volunteered weekly at Golden Empire Gleaners for many years. Joe and Pat moved to Bakersfield in 1994 and joined the Laf-A-Lot and Pairs and Spares Dance clubs, enjoying happy times on the dance floor.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Josef and Marie; his brother, Richard; sister, Mary; and brothers-in-law Howard Bennett, Ray Schroeder, and Donald Garibaldi. He is survived by his siblings Aloise (Alice), Alfred (Dorothy), Robert (Sandy), Rose Bennett, and Theresa Garibaldi; his loving wife of 65 years, Pat; children Mark (Rosalynn), Eileen Pettycrew (Jim), Marilyn Requarth (Bob), Dan (Lynnette), and Andrea Vargas (Jose); grandchildren Jacob, Anne Marie, Elena, Emily, Brendan, Joe, Chris, Nate, and Ryan; and many loving nieces and nephews. Joe will be greatly missed by all who knew and cherished him.
Memorial Mass will be Monday, September 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1800 Bedford Way, Bakersfield, California.
