Joe L. Munoz Obituary
Bakersfield Police Lt. Joe L. Muñoz (retired, 22 years service) died peacefully Wednesday, February 11, 2015 after a long battle with physical illness. He was 94.
A World War II veteran stationed in Japan, and a retiree from the Bakersfield Police Department, Joe was no stranger to civil service and public safety. He ran for Sheriff of Kern County twice, second only to Larry Kleier in the 1982 campaign race.
Joe is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Vivian M. Muñoz, his eldest son Edward Muñoz (B.P.D.), and 12 immediate siblings. He is survived in life by his son Joseph R. Muñoz and his wife, Lou Muñoz, Daughter Susan (Muñoz) Ward and her husband, Brandon Ward; daughter-in-law, Rosie Muñoz; brother Paul Muñoz and sister Alice (Muñoz) Periera. 11 grandchildren: Monte Muñoz, Laura Muñoz, Edward Muñoz, Stephen Muñoz, Janet Muñoz, Janine (Muñoz) Goad, Jennifer Muñoz, Joseph Muñoz Jr., Rick Ward, Marlon Ward, Mystie( Ward) Leos and her husband Ryan Leos; 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great granddaughters. Family relatives Pam Cantele (Muñoz) and Rhonda (Schoonover) Womack; Caregivers Reina Serega and Linda Gonzalez.
For all those Joe had touched and helped in his lifetime, we hope that he is remembered for his kind soul and selfless generosity. We all love and miss you Grandpa Joe!
Services to be held this Thursday, February 19, 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 601 E. California Avenue, Bakersfield, California. Burial to immediately follow at Union Cemetery.
