Joe O. Ramirez, 86, passed away in his home surrounded by loving family on May 30, 2016. A viewing will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 900 H Street, Tuesday, June 7, at 5 p.m., followed by the Recitation of the Rosary at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. Monsignor Craig Harrison will officiate, and interment will follow at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park, 2739 Panama Lane.
Joe was born January 2, 1930, in Berino, New Mexico. Joe was a Korean War Veteran who served as a part of the 65th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the U.S. Army. He retired from the City of Bakersfield after working twenty-three years as a Craftsman. In his profession, he became a very skilled painter, plumber, and welder. In his free time, Joe was passionate about baseball. He played baseball throughout his youth and traveled with the Buttonwillow Angels in the 1940s and '50s. He spent approximately thirty years coaching youth baseball for the local Junior Baseball Association (JBA). He loved watching his L.A. Dodgers play, frequenting Dodger Stadium and Spring Training with his sons and grandsons. Joe was most happy spending time with family, taking trips to casinos, and dancing with his lovely partner, Lola Suarez, on Sunday afternoons.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty-four years, Rachel; his son, Carlos; and his grandchildren, Corey Wahl and Cameron Ramirez. Joe is survived by his children, Joe Ramirez, RoseMary Wahl and her husband Willy, Ed Ramirez; daughter-in-law, Monique Ramirez; his grandchildren, Ryan Wahl and his wife Ashley, Tyler Ramirez, Zachary Ramirez, Kaylie Ramirez, Aly Ramirez, and Jakob Ramirez; his great-grandchildren, Corey Marie Wahl and Wyatt Wahl; and his brother, Armando Ramirez. Joe is remembered for his honesty, humility, diligence, and strong faith.
