John (Ben) Collins Obituary
John (Ben) Collins 1941 - 2013 Ben was born in Bakersfield, CA to Mildred and John B. Collins on August 18, 1941. He was raised in Lamont, CA, graduating from Arvin High School in 1959. Starting at 15, he became a self-taught transmission mechanic. If he could take it apart, he could put it back together. In 1969, he moved to Live Oak, CA where he owned a garage for 15 years. He continued to work on cars on his own. Building street rods was his passion. Going to street rod shows was his favorite entertainment. He was delighted when granddaughter, Carra, was old enough to go with him. In June, Ben accepted Christ as his personal savior. His desire to be baptized was foremost in his mind. Because of his physical condition, a conventional baptism was impossible. Thanks to our wonderful neighbors, Mike and Lauri Payne, they arranged baptism at Tarrio Fitness. Mike is a member of SDA Sabbath Keepers. They carried Ben into the pool on a back board and assisted Pastor Brian Langley in the baptism. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman of Hoffman Hospice provided the ambulance and attended. They were awesome in caring for Ben. Ben is survived by his wife, Mae Collins, daughters Scarlett Fields (John) of Evansville, Indiana, Kelly Wilson (Jeremy) of Bakersfield, CA, the shining star of his life, granddaughter Carra Wilson, sister Nelda Pearson (Tim), aunts Betty Newson and Patsy (Pat) Brittan. Ben was preceded in death by his son, John Benjamin (Little Ben), mother and father, Mildred and John B. Collins, and his grandparents. A special thanks to the staff of The Heart Hospital, especially nurses Ann and Vonnie, who were with us through it all, in the hospital and at home. Also, thank you to Dr. Denis Maddox and Dr. Sayed Alam, who fought diligently to help Ben. Graveside services will be held on March 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to First Missionary Baptist Church Women's Auxiliary or our youth group at P.O. Box 6063, Bakersfield, CA 93306, or the . www.bakersfield.com/obits
