John Raymond Hopkins Obituary
John Raymond Hopkins 1947 - 2013 John was born in Los Angeles, California to Albert and Virginia Hopkins on December 10, 1947. He grew up in Anaheim where he attended Loara High School. At age 19, he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country in Vietnam from February 9, 1966 to September 25, 1968. John was transferred with Budget Finance from Redondo Beach to Bakersfield in 1970. In 1975, he met Gary Hieronymus, General Manager with Barber Pontiac; it was Gary who offered John the position as Finance Manager. This would be the beginning of his 25-year career in the car business where he secured employment with Sangera Buick and Motor City. John was a barber for four years opening his first and only business-John's Top Cuts in Frazier Park in April of 2000. He loved music especially from the 60's, 70's and 80's beginning with CCR, Aerosmith, anything Lynard Skynard, Journey, The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers. John was an avid Dodger fan and would always be thoroughly engrossed listening to the Vin Scully "story telling" in between the play by plays. Football season was always a given in The Hopkins' household with Denver Broncos being his favorite team. John passed away unexpectedly at home on December 5, 2013. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 30 years Nancy; a son John, daughter Laura (Ron) Suredechkul, grandchildren Jason and Nicole; mother and father-in-law Doris and Boots Powers; brother and sister-in-law Martin and Shannon Powers; niece and nephew Hailey and Nicholas; half-brothers Mike and Willie Hopkins. He leaves his friends of 40 years, Becky Milliken-Hammontree and Mike Brewer. John also leaves many friends and relatives to cherish his memory. There will be a viewing held on Sunday, December 15th from 1:00 to 4:00 at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Avenue. Services will be held on Monday, December 16th at 2:00 at the Bakersfield National Cemetery. www.bakersfield.com/obits
