John S. Virrey - Sammy Sr. Obituary
John S. Virrey Sr. - "Sammy" March 19, 1933 - September 2, 2013 Chapel services for John S. Virrey Sr., 80, of Bakersfield will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 10 a.m. Visitation will be on Sunday evening from 4 to 8 p.m., both services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel. John was born on March 19, 1933 to Juan and Rosa Virrey in Bakersfield, California. John's love for the clarinet and playing in the band, helped him focus on his education at BHS and BC. He joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and was part of the occupational forces in Germany. John performed duties of radio operator and Medic, and was awarded the Good Conduct and Occupation Medals. He retired from the Kern County Planning Department after thirty-three years of service, and worked for the City of McFarland for six years. In 1974, John and his wife Ruth opened the doors to "Vir-rey's" Mexican Restaurant at 19th & G Streets, where he made many friends. He loved designing plans for Churches, and homes. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anytime, anywhere. Grandpa always encouraged us to "do your best; give it your all". He loved attending school events, especially graduations. He was our own personal cheerleader. John is survived by his second wife Alejandra, his children Elizabeth Liske, John Virrey Jr., Nathaniel Virrey, Adam Virrey, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, step children, Brenda, Ali, Anthony, Alfred, Ben and seven step grandchildren: siblings Joel Virrey, Isadore Virrey, Esther Espinoza and Elias Virrey. He joins first wife, Ruth Monsibais, his parents Juan and Rosa Virrey, siblings Daniel, and Henrietta to await the triumphant call of our Lord Jesus Christ. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Optimal Hospice, San Joaquin and The Bakersfield Heart Hospitals for the tender loving care they showed to Dad. www.bakersfield.com/obits
