1923 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
JOSE G. MARTINEZ "El Pariente" June 28, 1923 - November 16, 2012 Jose passed away peacefully on November 16, 2012 at the age of 89 surrounded by numerous family members. Jose was born in La Guella,Texas to Alfred and Paula Martinez and moved his family to California in 1960 to pursue a better life. Although Jose never had a formal education, he instilled his hard work ethic down to his children. He lived a full life and made many friends and acquaintances along the way. He was fondly known as "El Pariente", meaning friend to many. He was a man of few words and always had a smile for everyone. He enjoyed his Saturday caldo at the Arizona Cafe and his many other daily rituals. He especially loved his Tejano music and dancing, which he was also known for. He was a member of the Comite Mexicano del Beneficencia #6, Socieda Progressista Mexicano and Sociedad Juarez. Jose is preceded in recent death of his wife of 66 years, Venus Martinez. He is survived by his children, Alfred Martinez (Lucy), Jose Martinez Jr. (Diane), Bertha Ortiz, Mauro Martinez (Gloria), Juanita LaBaugh, Diana Harris (Steve), Elizabeth Padilla and Robert Martinez (Evalina). He leaves behind 28 grand, 39 great-grand and 2 great-great grandchildren. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the family members who helped and to the staff at Evergreen Healthcare for the care and comfort of Jose during his final days. Pallbearers will be Danny Martinez, Vincent Martinez, Jake LaBaugh, Max Harris, Zachary Harris, Gabriel Hinojosa , Bobby Martinez and Jonathan Martinez. Honorary Pallbearer will be Jason Ortiz. Visitation and viewing will be on Monday, Nov. 26th at the Basham Funeral Home on 3312 Niles St.from 5 to 8:00 pm, with Rosary at 7:00 pm. Mass will held at Our Lady of Guadalupe on 601 E. California Ave. on Tuesday, Nov. 27th at 10:00 a.m. followed by internment services at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery on 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, California.
