Obituary Condolences

Joseph Francis Patrick Greene, age 83, continued his eternal living with the Lord after his peaceful physical death in his home Thursday morning, June 25, 2015. His only response to "It could be worse" was "It probably is and we just don't know it" was realized in the last month as he endured increasing difficulties with Valley Fever, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung, which prompted a CAT scan that showed lung cancer.
The storyteller, joke teller, and conversationalist was born April 13, 1932 in Los Angeles, CA and lived in California, Helena, MT, Texas, and Spokane, WA before coming back home to Bakersfield. A graduate of Garces High School and the University of Santa Clara, he served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War, taught at Carroll College in Helena, MT, built homes, sold homes, and became a jack of all trades. An affable, learned man with quick wit, he had difficulty not extending a conversation with "Did you hear the one about..?"
Joe loved the outdoors and enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, and camping earlier in life and gardening throughout. He was a people person, loved being Catholic, and loved the Catholic Church. A parishioner at St. Francis, he is survived by his loving wife, Connie, all 11 children (Monica, Lucy, Joe, Dominic, Angela, Christian, Michael, Adam, Mara, Jeanette, and Jesse), 2 step children Bryan and Katie, 28 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren and counting. He is also survived by his brother, Robert ("Bobby") Greene, and preceded in death by his other 5 siblings and parents. He also leaves behind many friends and extended family, as well as an empty seat at McDonald's where he enjoyed coffee more than once a week for years with his good friends Ken Peters and Joe Pires.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, CA on Tuesday June 30th beginning at 9:00AM. In Joe's memory, any donations may be made to St. Francis Youth Center and Garces Memorial Foundation.
