Joseph Marion Ducato Obituary
Joseph Marion Ducato June 16, 1923 - February 6, 2013 On June 16, 1923 Joe Ducato was born in Northeast, Pennsylvania to Frank and Josephine Ducato. His family consisted of five sisters and one brother. The family moved to Merced , California in 1935 and later to Stockton, California where he attended St. Mary's High School. While there, he played football and tennis and also sold newspapers, worked in a grocery store, delivered milk, worked in a bakery, and as a mechanic at Continental Can Company. Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from 1943 to 1947. He was in the South Pacific Theater; saw action in the Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. When he was honorably discharged, he returned to work at Continental Can Company. In 1949, Joe joined the California Highway Patrol. He always wanted to help people. He retired after 30 years of service. Joe met Sonja Yaksitch and they were married in 1951. They had two children, Diane Ducato, a surgical nurse and Frank Ducato, a produce broker. Joe also had a business selling vineyard material, road oil, diesel fuel, and gasoline. Joe always said that hard work never hurt anyone and his main vacations were hunting. He loved hunting and made many trips to Montana, Alaska, and Canada, which gained him his elk, bear, buffalo, caribou, and moose of which he was proud. Among his community activities, Joe was head of the Bakersfield Crime Commission, member of the International Footprint Association, CHP 420 Club, life member of the Marine Corp. League, Navy League, and Italian Heritage Dante Association Board member. Joe and Sonja took many trips to Europe, through the U.S.A., and many cruises. They were married for sixty-one years. He loved his wife and family, the apple of his eye was his granddaughter, Adrienne Ducato (mother Diane). His later years were spent working in his vegetable garden, rose garden, and having lunch with his friends. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Vivian Masterman, Marie Delucchi, and Rose Swanson. He is survived by his beloved wife Sonja, daughter Diane Ducato, son Frank Ducato (wife Terry), and granddaughter Adrienne Ducato (mother Diane), sisters Francis Louviere and Josie Delaney, brother Frank Ducato and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Many thanks over the years to Dr. Ravi Patel and his staff, Dr. H. Lin, Dr. Frank Chang, and Mercy Hospice Care. Services will be Saturday, February 16th. at Our Lady Perpetual Help Church at 10:00 a.m. Officiating will be Monsignor Michael Braun. Visitation will be Friday, February 15th from 4-8 p.m. at Hillcrest Mortuary. Interment will be at the Hill of Valor Veteran's Memorial at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary.
