Joshua Serrano Obituary
Joshua Serrano Ph.D. August 23,1930 - April 20, 2013 Joshua Serrano died on April 20, 2013 in Bakersfield, California. He was born August 23, 1930 in Santa Ana, California to Jesus and Carmen Serrano. He was one of fifteen brothers and sisters. His family moved to East Los Angeles when he was six years old. He graduated from Garfield High School. He attended Barber College and worked as a Barber until he was drafted into the United States Army. After his discharge from the military Josh pursued a college education. He is a graduate of Los Angeles City College where he earned an A.A. Degree. He continued his education at California State University, Los Angeles where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Science, a teaching credential in secondary education and a Master of Arts Degree in School Administration. In 1980 he received a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University Of Southern California (USC). Josh spent the bulk of his working life in education. After nine years as a classroom teacher, Josh served as a school administrator in several areas including high school Principal for several years before his retirement in 1991. Josh has been involved in community activities throughout his life. He has been a member of Lions and a member and Past President of Kiwanis of Delano. He has served in a great number of civic ad hoc committees. He has also been an active member of several professional organizations in which he has held several offices. For 15 years he was a member of the Kern County Officials Association and officiated many high school football, basketball, baseball and softball games throughout Kern, Tulare and Kings County. In 1982 Josh was initiated into the Delano Elks Lodge #1761. He served as lodge officer of several chairs and as lodge committee chairman of several committees before becoming Exalted Ruler, a position which he held for two consecutive years (1992-93 and 1993-94). He served as Lodge Trustee for several years and completed his term as Chairman in 1998. At the District level, Josh served as Chairman of Lodge Activities, Americanism and Hoop Shoot. He served as President of the Past Exalted Rulers Association in 1997-98 and State Vice-President in 1998-99. He was installed as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler at the Elks National Convention in July 2000 and again in July 2003. Josh will be remembered for his commitment to the Elks organization, his love of education, his generosity, his honesty and youthful spirit. Josh is survived by his wife, RoseMarie. His step-children, Allyson Silva, Jan Bans and Martin Bans. His sons Jeffery Serrano and Jaime Serrano of Southern California; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Nava, Isaac Serrano, and Jaime Serrano. He is also survived by his father in law, Manuel Lopez of Delano, and his siblings Caleb, Abel, Elias, Rachel and Eva, and Jean Serrano the mother of his sons. Josh we love you!
