Joyce Sullivan Carpenter Obituary
Joyce Sullivan Carpenter 01/15/1931 - 11/19/2013 Born in McAlester, OK, daughter of James and Nettie Sullivan and one of eleven siblings, plus Mike. Came to California when she was about 8 years old, truly a Dust Bowl Child. Lived in a tent for a while at the Sunset Camp. Her siblings are Jim, Audrey, Lucille, Carl, Lilly, Doyle, Shirley, Hazel, and Mike. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Kenneth and Johnny. She was the wife of Randolph (Pinky) Carpenter who preceded her in death in 1998. We lost mom to cancer on November 19, 2013, after a hard, but short battle. As always she proved how strong she was. Mom was a survivor of the Dust Bowl Days. Her family was poor growing up, but always worked hard to make a better life. She overcame the hardships of her life with hard work, positive attitude, and with the love of her family and friends. She was a successful business owner, wonderful cook, made beautiful quilts, and was proud of her healthy gardens. She loved to dance, fish, and golf. We never saw her cry until she started fighting the cancer. She always kept negative feelings to herself and was always cheerful and pleasant. Her greatest gift to us was how she always made her family a priority in helping our lives to be much more comfortable emotionally, financially, and physically. She was always there for her family and friends. She had a zest for life and was always busy doing something productive. She was referred to as a buzz saw, because she was so active. She will be missed every day. Just thinking about her will put a smile on our face. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Lake and son-in-law, Don; grandkids Dennis Gatson, Tawn Moore and husband, Aaron; six great-grandchildren Taryn, Kylie, Brandi, Beth, Gianna and Lukas; one great- great grandson, Trenton; extended family loved ones Robin, Colton, Madison, Jayson, Randy, Debbie, Shannon, Trevor, and Erik; also loved family in her heart Tina, Patti, Earny, Erika, and Janie. She also loved her close friends Ellen, Pat, Jo, Donnie, Marie, and Sharon. Thanks to all the family and friends that made her last days be filled with so much love. Special thanks to Optimal Hospice. Our family encourages donation to the in memory of Joyce Sullivan Carpenter to continue the research to help save precious lives. Celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, 10 a.m, Greenlawn Memorial Park on River Blvd. with reception to follow at the family home. www.bakersfield.com/obits
