JULIE ANNE ZISK

1934 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
JULIE ANNE ZISK Obituary
Julie Anne Zisk, 82, passed peacefully away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in Cary, North Carolina. Julie was born May 18, 1934 and raised in Porterville Ca; the daughter of Frank Hansford Pratt and Nellie Gertrude Pratt. She graduated from Porterville High School, obtained her Bachelor's degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Hawaii.
Although she was born in Porterville, Julie spent the majority of her life and considered Bakersfield her home where she had many close and lifelong friends. A beloved and avid educator in the Kern County High School District for more than 50 years, she was among the first faculty at Foothill High School in 1962, initially as a counselor and later as the librarian. Then in 1993, she was recruited to Centennial High School to fulfill a life-long dream to establish their library with her vision. Books were her passion and the ability to share her passion with all who came through her libraries doors defined her life.
Julie loved being an educator and giving to "her kids"; whether spending hours studying legal briefs for Mock Trial competitions, coaching kids for We the People, or just working with her kids in her beloved library Julie truly loved her work. After retiring from the Kern County High School District, Julie continued to give of herself to children throughout Bakersfield volunteering to help kids and teachers in classrooms with reading and writing. She also remained heavily involved with curriculum and educational development and committees throughout the district. In 2012, she moved to Cary, NC to be closer to her son Niklas and his family.
A voracious reader, fanatical Dodger fan, and lover of the theater Julie was also an avid traveler with an adventurous spirit and curious mind that led her to explore beyond the beaten path and travel worldwide.
Julie is survived by her son Niklas and his wife Heather, and her grandchildren Madison and Garrett. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, Bakersfield, CA on September 25, 2016 at 2:00 pm followed by a time of reflection and memories.
