L. Marie Welty

1919 - 2010

L. Marie Welty 1919 - 2010 Lydia Marie Welty, nee Schemmer, passed away December 3, 2010, at the age of 91, surrounded and embraced by her loving family. Marie was born on August 13, 1919, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, the youngest of four daughters. She spent most of her young life in St. Joseph, Missouri, where she met Howard Welty, who became the love of her life for the next 67 years. In 1942, she travelled to California to marry Howard, who was serving in the Army Air Corp at Minter Field. They had three boys: Mike, Bill and Richard. Marie treasured her family and life long friendships and enjoyed meeting new people. She loved her Lord and was a faithful and dedicated servant. Marie embodied her motto, "Exercise, exercise, exercise!" and was active in many sports throughout her life. A founding member of the Bakersfield Racquet Club, she played tennis until she was 83 years old. A great lover of the outdoors, she was especially fond of swimming in the ocean at Pismo Beach. Marie and Howard moved into the Rosewood Retirement Community in 2006 and said it was one of the best decisions they ever made. After Howard passed away in 2009, Marie was grateful for the support and love of her friends; she also felt blessed by the dedication and wonderful care she received from the Rosewood staff. Marie is survived by son, Mike and wife Chris; son, Bill and wife, Charlene; three grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. Marie's son, Richard, passed away in 1985. A memorial service for Marie will be held on Friday, January 7, at 1:00 p.m., at the Rosewood Activity Center, 1301 New Stine Road, Bakersfield, CA. Reception immediately to follow.
