LARRY DUKE HOLCOMB Obituary
Larry Duke Holcomb passed away peacefully on September 9, after a long battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. He was a resident of Walnut Creek, California.
Larry was born in Lindsay, California, on January 2, 1945, to Duke and Sue Holcomb. He and his sister, Susan, grew up in the Central Valley, calling Woodlake and Bakersfield home. Larry enjoyed his formative years, often comparing his high school days to the movie American Graffiti. He attended North High in Bakersfield ('62), and was active in sports, especially swimming. He continued to swim and play water polo at Bakersfield College and Chico State University, enjoyed the camaraderie of his Lambda Pi fraternity brothers, and completed his business major, graduating in 1970 after service in the U.S. Army. He was a proud Viet Nam Veteran.
Upon his return from service, Larry settled in Walnut Creek. He began his professional life working for Bank of America as a real estate appraiser. This was short-lived as Larry preferred to work independently. He started his own company and for 40 + years appraised residential and commercial properties all over the Bay Area through Larry Holcomb, Inc.
Larry met Marilyn in 1980; they married the following year. They recently celebrated 34 years together, making many friends, enjoying visits to out-of-town family, planning travels near and far, embarking on cruises, and not missing a yearly trip to Hawaii.
Larry enjoyed people. He spent time in his early years coaching girls'
softball and basketball, and leading Bible studies for college students. He was the one person in his neighborhood who knew nearly everyone. His daily walks with his dog and his cigar enabled him to meet and get to know his neighbors. Larry was an avid wood-worker, and enjoyed honing his carving and carpentry skills.
You can't talk about Larry Holcomb and not mention his dogs. From his elementary days with Sherman, his big red dachshund, to Cleo, Ajax, Asti, Cassidy, Gatsby, Yankee, and Ezekiel, his 5th Bernese Mountain Dog, it seems Larry always had a dog by his side. He gave these pets the same love they returned to him.
Larry loved the Lord, his family, and his church. He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Danville for over 40 years where he worshiped, volunteered, and enjoyed Sunday fellowship. He was an avid singer, a member of the choir, but more recently it was those seated around him who enjoyed his voice.
Larry generously shared the blessings of his life with people and organizations. One favorite is the Macedonian Outreach, a Christian charity supplying daily needs to orphans and others in the Balkan nations.

A memorial service will be held at Community Presbyterian Church, 222 W. El Pintado Rd. Danville, CA 94526 at 2:00 PM on September 26, 2015.
