Larry Meier Obituary
Services for Larry E. Meier will be held on July 17, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Basham Funeral Care, 2213 Niles Street, Bakersfield.
Larry was born February 10, 1942 in Bakersfield to John and Dorothy Meier. He attended North High School, where he was a varsity basketball player, and Bakersfield College, before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he first became interested in the then-new field of computer science. After serving two tours in the Air Force, Larry returned to his hometown and worked in the computer field for the rest of his career. While raising his family, Larry attended Cal State Bakersfield at night to earn his Bachelor's degree in computer engineering. Later, Larry went to work for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, where he worked for 31 years before retiring in early 2012.
Larry was married twice, to Sharon Greenway and Gloria Gonzales. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his three children: Michael David Greenway, Elizabeth (Lisa) Meier Grace, and Matthew John Meier. He is also survived by his brother, Dennis Meier, his sister-in-law Mary Meier, daughter-in-law Becky Greenway, son-in-law Brian Grace, two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Larry was a "gentle giant," kind and generous, always putting others before himself. He had a quick wit and amazing insight. He loved sports, especially basketball, and could often be found attending Cal State sporting events. He loved his family very much and will be missed dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry's name to the Cal State Bakersfield general scholarship fund.
